  1. Hmm. Interesting. I recall seeing stories that while the Coos Bay & Lower Umpqua people were at Yachats, they fished for Coho and Steelhead in the Yachats River and nearby Big Creek, as well as gatheirng mussels off the rocks. Then back at Coos Bay in the 1880s there was an article of a complaint in the newspaper of Indians hunting ducks in the south dune lakes ‘out of season’. Some families were still fishing the old way in North Fork Siuslaw (with basket traps) into the early 20th century as Marge Drew Severy remembered learning to make traps from her father, Frank Drew.
