  2. Hi David, which band of Kalapuyans lived west of Eugene? I wonder because according to Andy Charles (Coos-Chetco, raised in the intertribal Siuslaw-Lower Umpqua-Coos Bay community that formed by Florence after the closing of the Alsea subagency) said that he was told by Siuslaw & LU elders that the Siuslaw country went about a mile or so east of Triangle Lake, and in addition to hunting in the hills out that way, Triangle Lake itself was a meeting area for Siuslaw and “Valley People” to trade, gamble, and just overall socialize. I am not sure which band of Kalapuyans were most likely to be regular visitors and traders in the Triangle Lake region.

Hello, David. Thank you for your deeply moving and accurate article here. I will use the information you have compiled to create a salute to the past peoples of Eugene before I deliver a report-back to Quakers from an event at Pendle Hill that reviewed the role of Quakers and others from Europe in displacing, killing and erasing native peoples in the New World.

I am a proofreader and I’d like to point out a few errors.

Starting with the Fishing Rights section of the article, there is a problem with no closing parenthesis: “…all of the western Oregon tribes (Grand Ronde, Siletz, Cow Creek, Coquille, Coos Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw and Klamath Reservation, and many people began working towards restoration in the 1970s during this age of revitalization and empowerment.”

Then in the Native Projects section: “…Chifin Native Cultural Center is the latest development in the vein were…”

“…programming in Native arts is offered. Chifin being an original place name for the Kalapuya People of the area.”

“Finally in 2016 Native people in Eugene, including members of NASU, were successful in getting Eugene to relabel Columbia Day to Indigenous People’s Day.”

In the first instance, maybe the word is “where” rather than “were”.
In the next instance, maybe the period is meant to be a comma.
In the final instance, maybe “Columbia” is meant to be “Columbus”.

Thanks again for your comprehensive article.
