Thank you David for this fine article, I learn so much about our tribe. I only wish I could more about my grandpa Joseph Dowd’s Rouge River People who were from Siletz.

I would like to know if why are you comparing General Lane to A heroic Indian Leader as Cheif Joseph. How much indian blood was General Lane ? It states that John Smith was the Siletz Chief of Siletz tribe in 1850. So I tend to believe the first enrollments and names of the information that is shown. The great war Chief was Chief Joseph not Joe Lane. Which would link to the Logan family.

    • I am confused as to this email. I was not attempting to glorify Joe Lane, but note the history of how he negotiated treaties with the Rogue River tribes. This has nothing to do with the Nez Perces tribes. The tribal leaders of the SW Oregon Tribes have their own history and context and deserve as much attention as we give Chief Joseph. Chief Jo and Chief John both should be honored by the tribes as heroes by the tribes in my opinion. Also there was not a Siletz tribe in the context you state in 1850. There were no reservations in 1850. There were Siletz people, previous to the reservation, and a tribe, but they are different from the Siletz tribe of 1875 and later. The 1875 Siletz tribe is a confederation of many tribes. Perhaps read the essay again.

      • Ok I understand better. I am simply writing what was written about Joe Lane. It was in the 1850’s an honor to gift your name to another. And many of the Native chiefs did respect the white American leaders, generals, etc. This does not make them Indian, only respected. We today live in a completely different context and paradigm. But our beliefs of the past do not always align with the actual facts of the past. All of my essays are written from historical records, I do not make up any facts. I am sorry if my essays do not align with your personal understanding of your history.

I believe the great war Chiefs to be of indian descent (Chief Joseph), Sam (Toquahar), Jim, Dabo, my grandfather (Sco-la-quit), John Tyee, (Asperakar),(Aid ban) great grandfather Abram. . Jim (Anaacharaarah). You can’t change history to try to make others look better, it is what is is. Show me enrollment sheets to prove otherwise.
